In our previous article link, we talked about Social Media strategies and how it’s important for brand awareness. Today we will discuss Design. For those out there who don’t know but 65% of people view or interact with something based on how they appear. People are more drawn to images, colors, and video. And if we didn’t mention in our previous post, if you are trying to acquire customers through your social media, you have 0.5 seconds to appeal to them, otherwise, they will simply move on to the next item. This is the reason why design is of utmost importance for any digital product, whether it is a social media page or your website. Design is even important in the physical world too.
Don’t believe us? Consider the case of Apple, which appealed to users with its simple design and great attention to detail.
Now, that you might have a rough idea about the importance of design, let’s talk about how you can improve designs for anything, whether it’s a website, social media page, or any poster.
So, let’s dive straight into some of the key tips that you can follow to have amazing designs:
Tip #1 - You decide where to direct the eye
The best designs have one thing in common, they drive users’ attention in a specific direction. And they achieve all of this through a combination of large and small fonts, using different colors. So, when you view such a design, you tend to follow the direction the person wants you to follow.
Another way to see this is contrast. Well, if you google contrast, you will find the meaning of it as “differ strikingly”. Let us explain, to make your objects appeal to the audience and to grab attention, you can use sharply distinct colors, which gives them a sense of where to look. The best practice is to make elements as much distinct as you can.
Tip #2 - White spacing
It is as simple as it sounds, whitespace is the space that you leave between two elements. Whitespace can also be used to distinguish two different parts of the design, like separating the message from the headline. You can consider whitespace to be a pit-stop for the audience so that they can free their eyes from many details present in your article. The use of whitespace prevents your design from appearing cluttered. Some designers even consider leaving many whitespaces in a design with little information, so that it gets the audience’s attention due to its simplicity which gives it a vibe of sophistication. The important thing here is to find the right balance between the amount of whitespace and content so that audience can have enough room to breathe.
Tip #3 - Look broader
Heard about how everyone says, “Look at the bigger picture”. I am sure they weren’t thinking about designing but one can draw parallels. In that context, they meant to always have your goals in mind and not let minor inconveniences bother you. In the case of design what we are talking about is to see how your work looks from far. Looking from far can give you a fair idea of everything present in your design, highlighting the wrongs, things that are going well, and most importantly, looking at the contrast and whether it is doing its work of drawing attention correctly or not.
Tip #4 - Alignment
Our brain has a natural sense of symmetry. It works on recognising patterns all around us like on the surface of leaves, mountain ranges, and ancient pillar architectures to consider a few. Due to this sense, we get a tendency to notice objects that don’t fall in line and consider them disorganised. And such odd objects or unaligned objects can cause your audience to move away from your design. Unaligned objects can give out the tendency of visually unappealing and illogical content. Hence, as we previously discussed having a broad look over your design can show you disorganised items which you can align either on the left margin or right margin. Keeping your content centre-aligned, can cause it to have different spacing which isn’t visually appealing.
Tip #5 - Always design with the audience in mind
If you are a design enthusiast, you must have gone around the internet and found buzzword design thinking. And if you further went around the subject, you must have found that it simply refers to the process that goes into designing anything. At the core of that process lies the concept of empathy.
Wondering what’s the role of empathy here? Here, empathy refers to designing your product, graphic, or content based on what the audience wants or needs. According to an analysis, 3 in 4 FMCG products fail within a year that didn’t care about customer needs, and 1 in 4 that succeeded designed their products from the consumer’s perspective, or we can say “walked in their shoes”. The concept of empathy in a mix with the design has evolved so much that, brands use different colours to convey different feelings, like bright colours to convey excitement and warmth. For you to make the best designs, figure out what your audience wants to see, what colours appeal to them the most so that you can customise your work around it.
Before we finish, remember that design is not one day’s work, the best way to figure out a design that works well for your audience, is to try your novel ideas, experiment a bit with your designs, and keep improving until you get desired results.
So that’s all from our side today. We will leave you with this quote to wonder about while you start learning and improving your designs.
“Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” ― Albert Einstein
